Villarreal v Manchester United: How can my prediction turn out right?

Champions League – Villarreal vs Manchester United

Venue: Estadio El Madrigal, Villarreal Date: Wednesday, 24 October Kick-off: 19:45 BST Coverage: Live on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra, plus live text commentary on the BBC Sport website

Manchester United have never lost a European home game at Old Trafford and could seal their place in the Champions League last 16 on Wednesday.

But they have never beaten Real Madrid, having not even come close since the 2004 semi-final, and Roberto Soldado’s past two goals have broken any hearts for Cristiano Ronaldo and company.

And why not? Jose Mourinho and his players know they could top Group A with a victory over Villarreal and they must not drop any more points after the dismal first game in the competition against CSKA Moscow.

England Under-19 star Luke Shaw will be missing in Villarreal due to a hamstring problem.

What the experts say

Former England manager Graham Taylor was on 5 live Sport:

“I think he [Mourinho] will sit in with his big guns tonight. [Marcus] Rashford will do the job tonight and I expect him to have a big influence. He’s still got that presence and goal threat from left-wing-back.”

Former England midfielder Phil Neville:

“I think United will score three. Villarreal have to sit back and get positive with their play because United don’t play, they move the ball. It’s as simple as that. They play across the front and it’s not hard to open up a team with that.”

Former Arsenal forward Ian Wright:

“I think United have gone in one of those Roy Keane type of teams where you don’t concede too many goals, you break down teams with the ball and are strong in defence but probably not so strong when it comes to set-pieces. You can’t afford to lose your header.”
