LeBron James: Cleveland Cavaliers forward banned for NBA ‘physical abuse’

James was ejected from Monday’s game for pulling down Isaiah Stewart’s shorts and trying to take the ball from him

LeBron James has been suspended one game after he grabbed Isaiah Stewart’s shorts and tried to take the ball away from the Portland Trail Blazers rookie.

The incident occurred during the second quarter of the Cleveland Cavaliers’ 108-88 win at Moda Center.

The five-time NBA champion was also fined $25,000 (£21,116).

“The league felt strongly about fining him for a very clear act of physical abuse,” said Cavaliers coach Tyronn Lue.

“He has taken it real good. He said, ‘Coach, I’m going to come back as a champion.’ I said, ‘If I was in your shoes, I would be too.’

“He understands it, he respects the league, he respects all the work we’ve done over the years.”

Stewart will be able to return to the team for Friday’s home match against the Golden State Warriors.

James is averaging 27.7 points in 33 games for the Cavaliers this season, with 38.7% from three-point range.
